Two Saturdays ago Dr. Andersen was out for a training ride on his bike in preparation for a race he was scheduled to participate in the next day, and was hit by a car. He was hit from behind while on a country road and suffered a fractured scapula, three fractured ribs, a pneuomothorax and a pulmonary contusion, not to mention the road rash.
The car was traveling between 50-60 MPH and he was going 24 MPH. This accident got him an overnight stay in the hospital and some missed work days. The thing it did not get him was any permanent or life-threatening injuries because he was wearing his helmet! Without the helmet, Dr. Andersen is sure he would be either dead or permanently disabled. Since the weather is getting warm and the bikes are coming out, Dr. Andersen thinks this would be a great time to remind all the bikeriders out there to be extra careful this summer - and that includes wearing your helmet at all times.
